来自台湾的音乐制作人Sonia Calico勇于融合不同的元素，包括Breakbeat、Trap、Future Bass、B-more、Footwork、Grime以及华语流行等。音乐的外衣虽然一直在随时代进化，单歌曲中展现出的能量却是始终如一的。她发行过的数首单曲曾收录在厂牌DoHits合辑中，也为加拿大鬼才ill Gates 2016年的EP“More Tea”制作官方remix。

作为台湾舞曲全新一代的代表，Sonia Calico在美国厂牌Muti Music发行了她的全新EP 《Fake Jewelry》。融合了实验性的Future Bass，加上Juke, Chill Trap, Bass, Hip-Hop 以及 Amen Break等的影响，她的音乐在风格多样化之中却有着鲜明的个人特色——一是快到飞起而恰到好处的BPM，二则是将台湾本地文化与她个人艺术的结合。采样李安《饮食男女》、日剧《东京爱情故事》，并带来与台湾说唱歌手PoeTeK熊仔的合作，《Fake Jewelry》小心翼翼地拥抱新兴的音乐形式，又在色盘上精心调和了传统与文化的继承。

Calico is sure that the connections between genres have organically brought her into the electronic sphere. “At that time (of starting) there was a genre called nu rave, and it mixed with indie music, with rock- that’s where I started to listen to electronic. After nu-rave, I really got into British music and I started to listen to a lot of UK Funky –  around 2010, it was huge. I still listen to a lot of UK dance music. One of my favourites right now is Richie Brains new record on Exit Records.”

The music scene in Taiwan is dominated by pop manufactured by what Calico calls “the same old producers”. But there is a sense of change, and she hopes  “we can some how unite in the future and make a cool electronic music scene in Taiwan.” Calico has set up parties featuring Bok Bok, Murlo, Deadboy and other electronic DJs, previously unheard in Taiwan. “Once I invited those other DJs to play I realized, I am not weird! I am trying to spread the awareness and make people interested in different types of music.”

“There are not many DJs in Taiwan like me”.

Calico is proud of the bands accomplishments and hopes “this experience will catch up with what I am doing now in a helpful way. But when I was touring, I was too young…we experienced a lot of stuff, but we didn't really know what was going on.” The effect of the Internet on the music industry is relentless. Calico has witnessed the shift first hand, “Everything is different. We have the Internet, we have bedroom producers, we have our own community.” Taipei’s underground community is small and close-knit, and from what I have seen of it, there is a strong sense of helping and sharing. “We have collectives, and different ways- its different to be being in a band working with agents and managers.

"Right now it’s me, on my own, doing everything. I connect with people directly, not through anyone.”

So how did the young indie rocker get into electronic and hiphop? “After the band, I started to promote parties. Then people told me I should try DJing- so I started! I had a lot of DJ friends at that time, we were all about the same age and we kind of influenced eachother, inspired eachother.” Calico’s talent at playing guitar aids her ear for all sorts of music.  Sonia produces and plays an assortment- from groove, jazz, lounge, dance to house, grime, hip-hop -  her canvas is huge and her tools are varied. We bond over 90’s RnB, and I become nostalgic talking about growing up with the music of  TLC and Destinys Child in London, “Yeah but when I grew up, it wasn't on that kind of music. I was listening to rock music.”

With an air that is wise beyond her years, DJ and producer Sonia Calico welcomes us into the basement of Kraft Musik in Taipei, Taiwan. It’s a Sunday afternoon and she is preparing for her monthly BeatMakers event. I am struck by her calm precision, and lack of ego. We conduct the interview in both Chinese and English and I learn about a musician, producer and DJ who has a wealth of experience in the music industry and yet still shines with excitement for learning more.

“I first started DJing in 2008/2009, before that I was in a band. It is an electronic rock band, 3 girls and one guy drumming.” Initially Calico is neither here or there talking about the band, but in reality Go Chic were pretty mega. They performed at Glastonbury, have toured Europe, and perhaps most impressively were produced by electronic rock master Peaches.
